My Favorite Bands Part 4: Green Day

Good day everyone. I take some break in blogging because I do some uniform concepts in Photoshop (and the fact that I can't send the links of my blogs to my patrons in Facebook makes me super frustrated). But now, I'm back again to share you my fourth favorite band, Green Day.

Composed of Billie Joe Armstrong in vocals and lead guitar, Mike Dirnt in bass and backup vocals, and Tre Cool (real name: Frank Edwin Wright III) in drums (and some touring members), Green Day was formed in 1987 at East Bay, California. As of now, they have released 13 albums: 39/Smooth (1990), Kerplunk (1991), Dookie (1994), Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997), Warning (2000), American Idiot (2004), 21st Century Breakdown (2009), ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! (all in 2012), Revolution Radio (2016), and Father of All...(censored) (2020). (I think you can guess where did I saw this).

I started listening when I was a kid. I listen "21 Guns" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" in radio and in my mom's cellphone. Until now I still listen to Green Day because my mom always listen to them in our laptop.

Okay, why them? Because I love their sound. Really rock. And their songs has a message about patriotism and the band's frustration about the US Government (which is I guess we as Filipinos feel right now). They are also one of the bands who influence some of the best singers and bands like Fall Out Boy, Slipknot, My Chemical Romance, The Click Five, Paramore (yeah, my fave), Avril Lavigne, Shakira, Lady Gaga, and Billie Ellish  And, I like the hair of Billy Joe Armstrong.

My 5 (or more) Personal Favorite Songs of Green Day (in no particular order) (some of my facts I've written are based from https://www.songfacts.com and based on what I've watch in Youtube) :

1. "The Saints Are Coming":  Originally, this is a song of a Scottish punk rock band called Skids but, in 2006, they collaborated with U2 to cover this song to help the people who was hit by Hurricane Katrina. I love sound of it and it's message of hope . And I love how they performed it in a pregame show in a NFL game in New Orleans in September, 25, 2006. (fact: the New Orleans Saints played in 3 different venues in 2005 season because of damage in their stadium, Superdome because of Hurricane Katrina. So that night became one of the biggest day in New Orleans because it signifies the rebirth of not just the for the Saints and New Orleans, but the whole Louisiana itself).

2. "21 Guns": I love the song and it's melody. Also, I love the message of it. It's about patriotism and someone who was fallen.

3. "Wake Me Up When September Ends": I love the song and its melody. It also tells a true story. Based on songfacts.com, Billie Joe wrote it for his father, who died in September, 1, 1982 because of cancer. And in the day of his dad's funeral, Billie Joe cried to his room and when his mom knocked to his room, he said "Wake Me Up When September Ends".

4. "Working Class Hero": Originally this was a song sang by the late great John Lennon. Green Day cover it in 2007 for the benefit album Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur. I love the song. It feels like Green Day really owns that song and I think, it has pressure to cover songs of John Lennon and they really nailed it. I also like the fact that they inserted the last two lines from the original song. And I love the message of the song. And because of this song, I am proud to say that I was raised by two "working class heroes", my parents.

5-7:

"Know Your Enemy": I love the song even it is repeating riffs. I love the message of the song about rallying.

"Boulevard of Broken Dreams": I like the song. I love it's melody and it's message about confused in life.

"Holiday": I like the song, it's message about power, and it's tone. And it has a special place in the hearts of Vancouver Canucks fans because it was used as a goal song in their 2011 Stanley Cup Finals run.

So that's it. I like Green Day and it's punk rock music. I also want to acknowledge Songfacts because it helped me a lot to write this blog.

    Next up: Fall Out Boy

    Happy reading
